an old hardship

whilst waiting for the time to pass during work, i was talking to a fellow malaysian and we started to dwell on old memories of college.

back then, it was so different. the daily rituals and habits.. waking up at 7am and rushing off to that hard cold shower. frantically getting ready for class. the fact that we had to wear formal clothes to class made it even worst. cus honestly, in malaysian's humid weather, who can be arsed to wear formal just to go to class.

so we'd normally rotate our shirts, monday blue, tuesday red, wednesday blue again.

class would normally end early and we'd scoot off to the cafeteria for our breakfast. i was under strict budget then, saving up for my trip to UK in 2005.. i'd stuff myself during breakfast and skip lunch and sometimes dinner. cus during breakfast, we had the option of taking up as much fried rice or noodles and pay only RM1. which was such a steal in this day and age.

afternoon's were spent lazing about in our rooms, some would be playing computer games whilst others took the sloth way around it by taking an afternoon nap. the weather was normally too hot to do anything, waking up from the afternoon nap sweating, a cold shower cured everything.

the active one's would do sports like football, futsal or volleyball.. whilst the rest would just linger and meet up with other friends and just hang out.

with couple's filling up most of the seats at the students cafe, you'd quickly notice them parting ways as the religious fellow approaches. that had always tickled me. to me, it was more of an annoyance the religious fellow's antics.

on wednesdays, the streets would be filled with stalls selling all kinds of stuff as it was Pasar Malam(Night Market) night. a full 200 meter stretch filled with stalls, yet basically their selling the same type of food. i'd go for my RM1.30 fried rice and top it off with a RM1.20 fried chicken. the portion of the rice was always alot, leaving me almost unable to do anything after dinner.

nights in dorms is normally just hanging out, even with assignments piling up. we were all malaysians by nature, thus procrastination was in our blood(bad habit!). a week or normally a few days before the dateline, we'd meet in groups and discuss the assignment. though it was an individual assignment, the bloke with the right answer would distribute his work to others.

that was a bad habit as well.

but it was considered sellfish for you not to help out. but we all did our part, each with different talents.

it was a sad week when college was about to end. some left without saying any goodbyes, unsure of it was the better move.

2 years down the line.

the hardest thing now is to keep in touch with them old friends.

each already paved their own paths. some have gone international, some sticking to old habits. who would've known what was instored for us then..
